Long Distance Riders
Drew Peterson
Drew is a local legend in the ultradistance and randonneuring circles. Putting in thousands of miles per year, he is an amazing climber and fast rider. The winner of the Montezuma Hill Climb competition in 2008 and the Palomar Challenge in 2010, he trains by climbing the eastern Sierras, accumulating tens of thousands of feet in a day. He can complete a century ride fueled by a single P&B sandwich!
Terry and Marisa Smith
Terry and Marisa started biking seriously only a few years ago and upgraded to nice road bikes in 2010. Without having ridden a century ride before, they tackled 5 century rides in 2010 and completed RAGBRAI! They have distinguished themselves as ultradistance warriors in a very short time!!!
Roman DeSalvo
Roman was inspired to participate in long distance riding after the 80 for Haiti ride in 2010. After finishing, he decided to go for his first century and completed that in 2010. Already gotten in his first century in 2011, he has a goal to complete several centuries this year.
Carl Ebert
Carl has been an active cyclist for many years and routinely logs in numerous century rides throughout the year. A regular participant in the weekly Bike Buddy Rides, he is a solid rider who logs in major miles each year. In addition to being an accomplished cyclist, he is an expert quilter!!
Heather Solheim & Brad Zwetter
Heather first started riding with us in 2006 on a mountain bike! She enjoyed being part of the group and did quite well, staying in contact with the group. What we all didn't know, was she was sandbagging to give us a chance. Once her road bike came along a few months after joining us, we all got a new vantage point as Heather would breeze by us on her rides. She dragged Brad out on to the road and off of his Mountain bike and both of them are regularly participating in centuries around SOCAL.
Brad also starting riding on the road with us in 2006 with his wife Heather. Unlike Heather though, Brad started out chasing the faster guys up the hill, and is now one of the riders up in the front of the group and disappearing in the distance. Brad is the originator of the famous "blow by the group while whooping it up" technique, where he starts after everybody has left and then flys by the group around mile 4 whooping it up and making little kids cry. His first century was in 2007 and regularly participates in centuries around SOCAL.
Mike Bailey
As one of the founders of Bike Buddies, Mike was the 2009 President of our club. Having retired from a long career as a Navy psychiatrist, he now works in the civilian sector and has more time to ride! Mike holds the California Triple Crown award for 2007 having completed 5 double centuries and received the Larry Schwarz Year-Rounder Award through the UltraMarathon Cycling Association. For 2008, he won the ultradistance competition at the Great Western Bike Rally despite cold, windy and rainy weather. He is a MAJOR influence and motivator behind almost everything we do as bike buddies. Mike's cheerful attitude and smile has kept many of us on the road pedaling much longer than we thought we could have. in 2010, Mike completed numerous centuries, a 300k and his first 400 Km brevet.
This is a running "friendly competition" of most centuries in a year. All century riders will receive a Long Distance Warrior Medal at the annual Bike Buddies Winter Membership Party. If you complete the event send your name to me to receive credit, distance entered must be 100 miles or greater.
