Biking 7/4/09
Dear Bike Buddies,
This Saturday is July 4th so let’s celebrate! For those of you who will be in town or not doing the Scripps Ranch Ride, we’ll have our usual ride from the Coffee Grounds BUT let’s be festive—red, white, and blue attire, attach flags to your bike or your helmet, etc. We’ll see if we can’t provide a little
patriotic music to match the décor. The high is forecast to be 81 so the weather should be rather pleasant starting out and through the morning. The Coffee Grounds will be open this Saturday for our usual coffee and bagels.
For those of you considering the 4th of July ride at Scripps Ranch, go to http://www.srop.org/fourth/bike.html for details on the 12, 28, and 50 mile rides. One nice feature of this ride is the cool T-shirt and beer garden at the end.
We now have 5 people committed to the July 11th ride from San Juan Capistrano to San Diego. Terrance, Tim, Wayne, Meagan and myself will be catching the 6:10 Amtrak to SJC for the 70 mile return ride. We won’t be pushing hard so expect a more leisurely ride down the coast. More details next week so come on out and join us.
Welcome to Jeff and Greg, new riders who joined us last week for our ride. It is always nice to have new riders accompany us on our club rides so feel free to invite your friends and acquaintances!
For those of you who have volunteered to act as course marshals for the “Bike the Bay” event on August 30th, Bill will be contacting you by mid-July so we can get a final count for the SDC Bike Coalition. There will be two non-mandatory training sessions, July 22nd and August 11th. Bill and I will attend and can pass on the info to everyone at one of our Saturday rides.
Thanks to any and all who participated in the fund raising pizza party last week sponsored by the Major Taylor Cycling Club for the benefit of “Cycling for Sight”. They raised $1000 to send one of their vision challenged members to the 3 day ride down the coast as a stoker on a tandem. For more information on this worthwhile organization or to make a separate contribution, go to http://cyclingforsight.org/ for details.
Wayne passed on some info about the big Canari Warehouse sale in a few weeks. Prices start at $5 with most items being NEW with TAGS attached. It will take place July 17 & 18, FRIDAY 8am – 4pm and SATURDAY 8am –12pm. They are located at 2471 Coral Street in Vista, off Sycamore Avenue and La Mirada Dr. Credit cards welcome – No checks. Last year, Wayne scored arm and leg warmers for $5, padded shorts with minor blemishes for $5, and a hi-vis jacket for $30.
Of course, if you want club merchandise, we too are having a sale at 30% off our usual prices!!! No blemishes, no seconds! Hector has small and medium men’s jerseys for $32, men’s and women’s shorts in nearly all sizes for $37, men’s bibs in S, M, L for $42, a men’s skinsuit in medium for $63, as well as arm warmers for $14. Send an email to Hector if you are interested in any of these items or the new club logo designs that he will be ordering.
RAGESD.org reports that Sycuan is likely to begin serving liquor at their casino shortly under the interim liquor permit authorized by the ABC. The decision to authorize this permit is being appealed and all local residents can protest the decision by filing a Protest Form with the ABC no later than August 12, 2008. A public hearing may follow. Go to www.ragesd.org and download the protest form. RAGESD also reports that Sycuan is also attempting to put 2000 acres of the Dehesa Valley into a trust, removing it from community oversight. Once that is done, it is conjectured that they would be free to then advance their business plan without community input and some regulatory oversight as well as remove them from the county tax rolls. This would allow them to expand their casino, develop the resort at Singing Hills, build a hotel or pursue other developments with less regulatory impediment. Please feel free to make your wishes known to Diane Jacob, County Supervisor of the 2nd District.
See you Saturday!
Best wishes,
Mike
